On of my goals in moving to a bigger city has been to expand my knowledge, worldview, empathy, and openness. Well my prayers have been answered over and over again, I am really learning the work and self work to remain receptive and open to new worldviews. Seattle Theater is the perfect tool for this because of the desired aesthetic to explores one’s nationality with ownership and pride.
Last week I worked a reading for a new musical called Abraham’s Land, it explores in a raw honesty the conflict of Palestinians and Israelis, notably in the Gaza strip. This small area of land receives bombing and needless imprisonment on Palestinian refugees who have grew up in the refugee camp. It forced me to face my own ignorance and preconceived notions of Israel and the conflict.
Ignorance is easy; it is familiar and my natural default. However when someone is confronted with raw truth, it forces one to two sides- willful ignorance or action and understanding. The way of understanding I think takes a consciousness detoxing of mindsets or upbringings that are in contrast to that understanding. It requires an openness, an acceptance, and a love to bubble to the surface. That is what this reading did for me. It moved me to a place of openness, of acceptance, and of love. A larger understanding of the interconnections of humans . . . aka the power of theater.
